CAN GOD? SERIES #1

TEXT: PSALM 78:12-20

We say we want to serve the Lord and know His will, then when He tells us what He wants us to do, we often balk at what the Lord is doing. This was Israel’s problem – called out of Egypt to follow the Lord by faith – they constantly doubted the power, the promises and the presence of God. The attitude of their hearts is summed up in the two word question – “Can God?” This question was doubting everything about the Lord. They needed a lesson in faith. I realize that we are a lot like Israel. We often ask the question “Can God?” I believe what the Lord wants us to learn in these days is that “God Can!”

1.        THE CONDITION OF THE PEOPLE

a.       They were faithless – vs.20, 41

·          A lot like the people of the Lord today. Instead of trusting God and living by faith, we worry and we fret.

·          John 20:27

b.      They were forgetful – vs.7-16; 20-29; 42-55, 65-72

·          Israel was unable to remember all the great miracles that God had performed on their behalf.

·          This describes us, doesn’t it? How many times has God met the need, done the impossible, and proven Himself to be God for you?

c.       They were foolish

·          By asking “Can God?” – proved their ignorance of His power and His Person.

·          The church is guilty of the same – some problem will arise in our lives or the church and the first thing we say is “Can God?”

·          This was the condition of the people , we often mirror this same attitude. We can trust the Lord, He will demonstrate His power in our lives. One way we can know this is by understanding the Character of God.

2.        THE CHARACTER OF GOD

a.      His Promises – vs.5-7

·          He was always faithful to do what He promised to do.

·          God has NOT changed!

·          Titus 1:2

b.      His Performance – vs.4, 12

·          Israel had experienced the presence and the power of Almighty God. Imagine seeing God defeat all your enemies, seeing His glory in the Tabernacle, seeing the pillar of smoke and of fire. Imagine – the Lord hasn’t changed in this area either!

c.       His Power – vs.4

·          He was more powerful than every obstacle they faced.

·          Job 42:2

·          Ephesians 3:20

d.      His Patience – vs.38

·          Thank God we serve a patient God!

3.        THE CHALLENGE FOR TODAY

a.      Have confidence in God (Trust)

·          The world is in despair and doubt and asks the question “Can God?” – we, who believe the Bible, should stand up and shout, “God Can!”

b.      Call to mind His past works (Remember)

·          Think of the times He has delivered you. God is able and He will come through for you, every time. Let the past be your reminder and learn to trust Him no matter what!

c.       Carry out His commandments (Obey)

·          Genuine faith in the Lord always manifests obedience to the Lord and His Word.

CONCLUSION

I want to invite you to come to the Lord and bring all your doubts, your fears and your questions – let me leave this thought in your mind GOD CAN!
