“Follow Me!” - Mark
1:17
Florence
Griffith Joyner died at the age of 38, just a decade after
dazzling Olympic track with speed and glamour that has yet to be
matched. “Flo Jo”, as she was affectionately known, was a triple
gold medalist at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. She has world records
that still stand in the 100 and 200 meters. Joyner had accepted
the challenge to be the best and the fastest – there was a price
to pay but for her the rewards of the challenge were worth the
cost.
Jesus
challenged three fishermen as they tended their nets. He
commanded, “Follow Me!” (Mark 1:17). They did, and with a
handful of other ordinary men and women they changed the world.
Upon receiving the Holy Spirit, they were empowered to do a new
work (Acts 1-2). Eventually critics would charge that they had
turned the world “upside down” (Acts 17:6).
Our world
is wrong-side up and right-side down, living by principles
opposed to our Lord’s teachings. We can either follow the
world’s dead-end philosophies, or we can accept Jesus’ challenge
to bring change to the world.
Flo Jo
turned the track world upside down and now she will be missed.
Let’s serve God, today, by praying, giving, and witnessing in
our world while there’s still time.
- What
is it about Jesus that makes you follow Him?
- How
much time do you spend praying, giving, and witnessing?
- Are
you making a difference where God has placed you?
“Lord, make a
difference through my life. In Your name, Amen.”
