FCA Impact Play:
Sweetness Defined
READY:
“Blessed are the people of whom this is true; blessed are the people whose God is the Lord” –Psalm 144:15
SET:
Walter
Payton, the National Football League’s career rushing leader and
a man who earned the nickname “Sweetness” for his disposition
and ability to elude tacklers, died, at the age of 45, of a rare
liver disease.
“He
had more heart than anyone else who played the game,” said Jim
Brown. “He took on bigger guys. He fought for every inch. He was
a true champion and I don’t say that about too many players.”
One of
Payton’s former coaches, Fred O’Conner said, “When God decided
to create Walter, He said, ‘I’m gonna make me a halfback.’”
“I
will always remember his smile,” Mike Singletary said. “He loved
to laugh. Loved to have fun. You couldn’t believe a guy who was
as great as he was would have that much humor.”
From
all that has been written about Walter Payton it is proof that
his life affected so many. So it is with every Christian. Our
attitudes, our expressions, the joy in our spirit affects
everyone we meet. Often we don’t realize the great influence we
have over people. We owe them our best and that, in its highest
sense, can only be when Christ is Lord of our lives. “Blessed or
happy are the people whose God is the Lord”
(Psalm
144:15).
Nothing is so attractive as true joy. Christian joy rises up
from the Holy Spirit in our hearts and this joy, true joy is
deep and permanent. It creates a spiritual glow which, without
words, speaks of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, to others.
